Titles

Roman Reigns with two titles

In the WWE universe, there are numerous titles that superstars can win throughout the season. In fact, every month during Premium Live Events, titles are put up in certain matches while others are held until Wrestlemania. As of right now, there are about nine known titles still in use. There is the new World Heavyweight Champion that was introduced in the 2023 Draft, and the current holder is Seth “Freakin” Rollins. It is a Raw title. The Smackdown equivalent is the WWE Championship, which is held by Roman Reigns; however, Reigns also holds the Universal Championship. He has held these two titles for over 1000 days! Because of Reigns’s long reign (ha, pun!), the officials decided to combine the two titles into one Smackdown title.

Another combined title is the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship. This title was previously two separate titles for both Raw and Smackdown labeled as Raw Tag Team Championship and Smackdown Team Championship. The current holders of the combined titles are Damien Priest and Finn Balor–two members of the Judgement Day. They have had this title for two weeks now, beating Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens who had gotten the titles at Wrestlemania 39 from the longest reigning Tag Team Champs The Usos. The other big title used in both Raw and Smackdown is the Intercontinental Championship, currently held by Gunther.

On the diva’s side of wrestling, there are equivalents to the previously mentioned three titles. For the Smackdown title, the WWE Women’s Champion is Iyo Sky. For the Raw title, the Women’s World Champion is Rhea Ripley–another member of the Judgement Day. The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship is held by Chelsea Green and Piper Niven.

Retired titles are not uncommon in WWE. The European Championship was deemed inactive after they basically combined that title with the Intercontinental Championship in 2002. The Million Dollar Championship was created for the Million Dollar Man, Ted DiBiase. It was held by a few people as well, but it was soon retired. The Hardcore Championship, Cruiserweight Championship, Light Heavyweight Championship, Divas Championship, and the World Tag Team Championship were all retired for one reason or another. My favorite retired belt is the 24/7 Title.

R-Truth and the 24/7 Title

With over 100 holders, this title can be claimed anywhere, at any time as long as there is a referee around. This was definitely a fun title as people would run around backstage to try and pin people. The man who did this the most was R-Truth. With his recent injuries, this title had become less important in the industry. It was retired in 2022 by Nikki Cross after calling it ‘trash.’ Still, googling the best 24/7 pins is definitely worth it.

WWE: Then and Now

Vince McMahon Sr. (left) and Vince McMahon Jr. (right) World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has such a long history that includes many name changes, but no matter what, the fanbase has stuck by its side. Vince McMahon Jr. is the name most people associate with WWE as he has run the company for over 40 years. WWE was not the large company it is today, for McMahon Jr. shaped the corporation to fit his standards. In 1982, McMahon Jr. bought World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) from his father McMahon Sr. and changed the name to World Wrestling Federation (WWF)... that extra W just wasn’t doing it for him. After purchasing the company, McMahon went into different wrestling territories and bought wrestlers from them; thus, those territories eventually went bankrupt. Vince himself owned the New York territory of entertainment wrestling, but his advancements into other territories included famous faces, such as Stu Hart with Stampede Wrestling covering the Montana area and Memphis Wrestling ...

Pay-Per-Views

Wrestlemania 1 Pay-per-views (PPV) began after Vince McMahon Jr. bought many wrestling territories in the United States. The first ever PPV was Wrestlemania debuting in 1984. Wrestlemania was smaller a production than it is nowadays. In fact, next year in 2024, it will be the 40th Wrestlemania held in Philadelphia, PA. Looking at the commercials, it will be one of the biggest events yet! Every month there is a pay-per-view all with different gimmicks and titles, but there are four shows that have stayed the same yearly. Wrestlemania, Summer Slam, Survivor Series, and the Royal Rumble are continuous each year. Survivor Series came up first in 1987. It normally is always around Thanksgiving time. The show itself has evolved since it used to be just five against five with random teams; they tried to focus on good versus bad. Now, like every PPV, there are more matches that are important to the show. The other two were both introduced in 1988. Summer Slam’s best memory has to be “The Mega ...

Representation in WWE

Asian Culture in WWE In WWE, there has always been representation of other cultures. The main ethnic group showcased has to be the Samoans. The Samoans are a part of the Pacific Islander group, and there are a lot of them who have wrestled in WWE history. To start, High Chief Peter Maivia debuted in wrestling in 1962. His daughter married Rocky Johnson, which is how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is part Samoan. Afa and Sika Anoa’i were brothers with Peter Maivia, and they were the Wild Samoans Tag Team. Roman Reigns’ dad is Sika Anoa’i while Samula is the son of Afa. Other Samoans include Tonga Kid, who is Umaga’s Brother and Yokozuna who is Rikishi's cousin. Rikishi had Jimmy and Jey Uso and Solo Sikoa. The Anoa’i family is very large and confusing, and there are so many more that I have not even listed. Samoan Family Asian representation is a big part of WWE as well. My favorite Asian wrestler is Asuka. She screams and no one knows what she is saying, but you can tell how much wrestl...
